Abstract

The study aimed to assess the implementation of Music, Arts, Physical Education and Health (MAPEH) in the elementary and secondary public schools of the Division of Cabadbaran City, School Year 2018-2019. Assessment of the implementation of MAPEH was based on teachers’ capability, adequacy of school facilities and equipment, administrative support and implementation of DepEd policies. This study gathered the profile of teachers as to age, sex and specialization.

The descriptive-comparative method was utilized in the study. A survey questionnaire on the implementation of MAPEH was used in the gathering of data. The respondents of the study were 197 elementary school teachers and 30 secondary school teachers and 31 school heads who were selected using complete enumeration. A four-point Likert Scale was employed in quantifying the responses on teachers’ capability, adequacy of school facilities and equipment, administrative support and the implementation of DepEd policies. Frequency, weighted mean and U-test were utilized in analyzing the data.

The study revealed that most of the MAPEH teachers have no specialization or are not major on any of the subjects of MAPEH. Majority of the teachers were of younger age and were female.

School heads revealed that they agreed but not strongly agreed that teachers are capable in teaching MAPEH subjects. Teachers expressed that their school heads are supportive in undertaking MAPEH activities but failed to provide the schools with the basic facilities and equipment especially in teaching physical education. To both school heads and teachers, the implementation of DepEd policies is a must.

Findings further showed that there was a significant difference in the implementation of MAPEH in the elementary and secondary schools.

It could be concluded that the Department of Education had not given due importance in the implementation of MAPEH in public schools which is supported with the findings that teachers are newly-hired and without any specialization. This is supported by another finding on the scarcity of facilities and equipment needed in teaching physical education in all public schools.

The subject teachers and the school administration need to work hand-in-hand in order to give the learners the quality education students deserve as far as MAPEH is concerned.
